Top 3 Qualities We Look for in a Director

  • Organizational and Leadership Skills

The director must be able to manage a creative team, oversee rehearsal schedules, and coordinate all aspects of production efficiently. This includes working with stage managers, lighting/sound designers, set and costume leads, and any music or choreography staff. A strong director ensures the production runs smoothly, auditions are open and inclusive, and all safety and venue guidelines are followed.

  • Strong Communication and Collaboration

Directors need excellent communication skills to clearly convey their artistic vision to the cast and crew. They must foster a collaborative, respectful environment where all team members feel heard and valued. Directors should also communicate effectively with AOA staff to keep the production aligned with the fund’s expectations and timeline.

  • Community Engagement and Inclusivity

A successful director values community and ensures productions are welcoming to everyone. This includes creating shows that respect diversity, avoid outdated or racially insensitive content, and reflect AOA’s mission of providing meaningful, accessible theatre experiences. Directors should actively consider the audience, cast, and creative team, and make choices that celebrate inclusivity and representation.
